While talking with Max Foran about Cowboy Culture I saw a book on his shelves on an artist called Stanford Perrot. The book was from the UofC Press and written by Max.
Q: Tell me about Stanford Perrot. Max: Stanford Perrot
was a boy who grew up in Calgary. Was
one of the first students to go through the Provincial Institute of Technology
and Art in the 1930’s and was taught by HG Glyde.
A very good student, always showed a lot of promise and after a short
stint teaching public school he was hired in the mid 40’s to teach at the same
school that he went to. He stayed there from 1947 to
1974 and he retired as the head of ACA. In
those 27 years he worked very closely with the head, before he became head,
Illingsworth Kerr. And he worked
closely with Illingsworth Kerr to build up the art department and the provincial
department of art, to become ACA. He was also a master teacher.
Probably the best and he influenced a whole generation of Alberta artists. Any Alberta artist who was anyone probably studied and took
classes from Stanford Perrot. Outstanding,
brilliant teacher and a marvelous watercolourist in his own right. |
