Interview with Alex Janvier, artist, for Dreamers and Doers.

Q:  Tell me about how arts are helping natives re-discover their culture.

A:  That part is coming alive.  And I think the artists that I know who started the 'who' trend, it went against all odds to get here.  And they dubbed us the Group of Seven.  And there was eight, but I don’t know how the media counts.  They kind of did it to make a bit of mockery to the established Group of Seven.  And they tried to make us fit into that media  appeal,  I guess.

But we didn’t need that, we were eight.  Bill Ried was one of them and there was eight of us but some how we were shrunk to seven

It was in the early ‘70’s and up to the ‘80’s.  But it was the hard core of the development and during that time Norval Morriseau made the break through in Toronto.  He had a sell out, an over night sell out and sensation and the media picked it up.  I think that was the starting gate of all the things that were to happen there after.  We were fortunate to be there with paintbrushes and whatever we were doing at that point.
